Harold Buss, 88, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away, Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ with Reverend Jan Christensen officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitations will continue Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Del Kellen, Earl Albert, Bill Buss, Roland Detloff, Mike Detloff, and Roy Hawkins.
Harold Lester Buss was born April 4, 1921 in America Township, near Le Mars, Iowa to William and Bertha (Moir) Buss. He attended country school near his home. As a young boy, his mother died and the family later moved to Fairfield, California. Harold graduated from Armijo High School, in Fairfield, California. Following high school, Harold began working at Mare Island shipyards as an electrician, he later transferred to the Peal Harbor Naval Yards. After 2 ½ years in Hawaii, Harold returned back to the mainland and joined the Navy. While in the Navy, he was stationed at Okinawa Naval Base in the Pacific area.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Harold returned to Iowa and was united in marriage to Lavonne Criswell on January 15, 1947 at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Le Mars. They farmed for 10 years near Le Mars, then moved to Fairfield, California where Harold worked for the California Department of Highways. He retired after 27 years of service on December 30, 1984 and moved to Le Mars early in 1985. While living in Le Mars, Harold and Lavonne were members of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol Clay and her husband Dusty of Le Mars; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Clay and his wife Katy of Mankato, Minnesota, Andrew Clay and his wife Shelly and their son Austin of Seney, and Jennifer Plueger and her husband Marty and their son Memphis of Le Mars; 3 brothers, Frank Buss and his wife Fay of Vacaville, California, Lloyd Buss and his wife Georgine of Paullina, Iowa, and Ralph Buss and his wife Joyce of Fairfield, California; a brother-in-law, Wayne Weber and his wife Beverly of Le Mars; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha (Moir) Buss; and his wife Lavonne on September 14, 2008.
