Elmer H. Tapper, 69, rural Merrill resident and Plymouth County native, died Tuesday (Feb. 26. 1991) at his residence after a long illness.
Funeral were Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill, with Rev. Frank E. Philipp, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Hillside cemetery, Merrill, with military graveside services by the American Legion Post 125, and the DAV Chapter 54. Funeral arrangements were under direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, Sioux City.
Mr. Tapper was born Nov. 28, 1921, at rural Akron to Henry and Bertha J.C. Meinen Tapper. He graduated from Central high school, Sioux City. On May 17, 1946, he married Norma J. Thomas at Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds. He was employed by the Milwaukee railroad for 13 years until he retired in 1975. He was a lifelong farmer and retired in 1991. He lived on the farm at Merrill for 35 years. He also operated the family business, Tap's Cafe in Merrill. Mr. Tapper was a member of St. John Lutheran church in Merrill, the American Legion Post 125 of Merrill and was a lifetime member of DAV Chapter 54, Sioux City. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the army infantry from Oct. 13, 1942, to April 26, 1946. He received two bronze campaign stars, Bronze Arrowhead, Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and the Purple Heart.
Survivors are his wife of Merrill; three daughters and their husbands, Pamela Tapper Luckel and Mike of Le Mars; Cynthia Tapper Sudbeck and Tim of Kingsley, and Pattie Tapper Koopmans and Arven of Ireton; a son, Thomas of Merrill; a brother and his wife, Darwin and Betty Tapper of Sioux City; three sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Marcella) Olmstead and Darlene Roest, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. Jack (Inez) Dendy of Fresno, Calif. nine grandchildren.
