Caroline M, Marienau, 98, Merrill native and lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 1991) at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John's Lutheran church in Merrill with Rev. Frank Philipp officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill, under direction of Mauer-Johnson funeral home in Le Mars.

The former Caroline Mattas was born April 22, 1892, at rural Merrill to Joe and Mary Buryanek Mattas. She married Edward Marienau Nov. 15, 1916, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Merrill. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors are three sons, Melvin Marienau and wife, Elsie, Le Mars; Edward Marienau, Merrill; Frank Marienau and wife, Margaret, of Merrill; five daughters, Marian Baker and husband, Francis, Merrill; Wilma Jessen and husband, Merton of Le Mars; Norma Vanderloo and husband, Virgil, Ackley, Iowa; Waneta Tevis and husband, Gaylon of Federal Way, Wash.; Carol Stroup and husband, Richard of Gilbert, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Bauerly of Sioux City and Verna Johnson of Brunsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; eleven brothers and sisters and a daughter, Dorothy.
