Elmer Heien, 88, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at his home in Le Mars.

Elmer Herman Heien was born July 22, 1922, on a farm West of Craig, the son of Otto and Louise (Baack) Heien. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Preston Township, rural Akron, and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig. He attended country school near Craig.

Elmer was united in marriage to Mary Wescom of Jamestown, N.D., on Oct. 24, 1945, in Glendive, Mont. Together they are the parents of three children, Sharon, Joann and Bob.

During World War II, Elmer served his country with the United State Army, being stationed in Guam. Following his discharge, he returned to Plymouth County.

Elmer was a farmer his entire life. He and Mary farmed in Grant Township. The couple farmed and raised livestock in Grant Township their entire married life until retirement in 1983 when they moved to Le Mars.

In April 2009, Elmer moved to Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars (Brentwood) and later returned home in August 2010.

Elmer had been a member of Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars, until retirement when the couple became members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. While attending Christ Lutheran, Elmer volunteered on several church boards and assisted with farming the church ground.

Elmer was a steward of the land. During retirement, he continued his farming with his garden at their home in Le Mars. He enjoyed playing cards in several card groups, fishing, dancing, and polka music.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary of Le Mars; three children, Sharon Kramer and her husband Henry of rural Ireton, Joann Osterbuhr and her husband Byron of rural Le Mars, and Robert "Bob" Heien and his wife Kathy of Owensboro, Ky.; six grandchildren, Chris Kramer, Brenda Kramer, Amy Osterbuhr, Chad Osterbuhr, Erin Ward, and James Ward; three great-grandchildren, Emy Osterbuhr, Jordan Osterbuhr, and Cheyanne Kramer; a brother, Kenneth Heien and his wife, Inez of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Richard Wescom of Jamestown, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Harriett Wahl and her husband Wilmer of Jamestown, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Louise (Baack) Heien; two sisters, Irene (Clarence) Brunken and Elsie Zenk; and a brother, Lyle (Shirley) Heien.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. The Rev. Greg Gabriel officiated. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars, with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Visitation with the family present was after 4 p.m. Saturday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.

Pallbearers were Kevin Beaver, Delmar Otten, Brenda Kramer, Amy Osterbuhr, Chad Osterbuhr, and Chris Kramer.
