Megan Dirks, 25, of Akron, formerly of Iowa City, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at her parent's home in Akron following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Monday), with the family present after 5 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a parish rosary, all at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home -- Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Megan Dirks, 25, of Akron, Iowa, formerly of Iowa City, Iowa passed away Friday, August 27, 2010 at her parent’s home in Akron following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010, with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary, all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Megan Lynn Dirks was born June 24, 1985 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Rick and Robin (Haug) Dirks. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Megan attended Akron-Westfield Community School. Megan served as Student Body President, was a National History Day finalist, was involved in leadership conferences, and participated in many science studies with Ron Wilmot. Megan was the homecoming queen and graduated valedictorian with the class of 2004.

Megan received the Presidential Scholarship from the University of South Dakota. During her time at U.S.D., she went on a volunteer and teaching trip to Ghana, Africa. She was also a member of the Theta Sorority. In 2009, she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Megan was continuing her education at the University of Iowa. She was currently pursuing her Masters of Fine Arts degree. She was also a drawing instructor at the University of Iowa. Many of her works of art are on display at the Des Moines Art Center and the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, SD. She was recently the juror’s choice in the publication of the “New American Paintings”.

Megan passion in life was art, whether it was painting, drawing, sculpting, or photography. She also loved the outdoors and to go hiking and canoeing. Megan also enjoyed cooking and loved the time spent with her nephew, Julian and her cat, “Bazooka”. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her parents: Rick and Robin Dirks of Akron; her siblings: Kristin Dirks, Jordan Dirks, and Daniel Dirks, all of Akron; her paternal grandparents: Richard and Helen Dirks of Akron; her maternal grandparents: Dwight and Sandra Haug of Melcher, IA; aunts and uncles: Diana and Richard Schrader of Pleasantville, IA, Karla Fuell of Tuscaloosa, AL, Carla Granstrom of Sioux City, IA, Mary and Mike Caskey of Akron, IA, and David Dirks and his fiancé Ellen Manning of Akron, IA; her nephew: Julian Small of Akron, IA; and many cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her great grandparents: Helen and Robert Haug, Carl and Lucille Anderson, Ed and Maude Dirks, and George and Aldea Donnelly.
