Albert W. Hummel, 89, of Akron, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1992, at his home.
Services were at 10:30 Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Rev. Don Greenough officiated. Gary Tucker, soloist, sang "How Great Thou Art", accompanied by Eric Banks, organist. "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", was sung by the congregation. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, under direction of Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Pallbearers were Marc Thorson, Mason Thorson, David Morin, Scott Ferguson, Ken Wickman, and Randall Lilly.
Mr. Hummel was born April 2, 1902, in Sioux City, the son of John and Martha (Brouette)Hummel. He attended Breezy Hill country school and Westfield elementary school. He then worked in the Westfield Grocery Store. He married Opal Bliss Dec. 8, 1923 in Westfield. The couple lived in Sioux City and later moved to Westfield, where they operated the Hummel Grocery Store, which later combined with the hardware store. Mr. Hummel was the first propane dealer in northwest Iowa. He was a substitute
mail carrier, and served as sheriff and mayor of Westfield. He retired in 1968. In 1972 they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where they lived until returning to Akron in October 1991. The couple loved to travel especially with the Iowa Hardware Association and the grandkids.Mr. Hummel was a member of the Congregational church in Westfield, and the Masonic Lodge more than 55 years and Order of Eastern Star more than 50 years. He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple and the Sioux City Consistory.
Survivors include his wife, Opal of Akron; a daughter, Joyce Thorson of Akron; five grandchildren, Marc Thorson, Melinda Wickman, Martha Morin, Mason Thorson and Mary Joyce Ferguson; 11 greatgrandchildren; and two stepsisters, Mrs. Robert (Elaine) Michael of Akron and Mrs. Phil (Stella Mae) Beaubien, of Westfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha Jane Hummel; a step-mother, Josie Hummel; a step-brother, Ray Olson; and a son-in-law, Mac Thorson.
