Ronald H. Mayer, 55, of Remsen, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at his home in Remsen after a brief battle with cancer.

Ron was born Feb. 7, 1955, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, the son of Albert and Ethel (Freking) Mayer. Ron was raised in the Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Remsen in 1973. He then attended Northwest Iowa Technical School in Sheldon, taking the power lineman course.

On Oct. 18, 1975, he married Martha Staab in Remsen. He worked for the utilities department in Paullina, Gowrie and for the past 20 years, in Remsen. He also did numerous odd jobs for various members of the community.

Ron was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen.

Survivors include: his wife, Martha of Remsen; two daughters, Ashley Mayer and her special friend, Jon Reed, and Amber Mayer and one grandson, Bentley, all at home; his mother, Ethel Mayer of Omaha, Neb,; two brothers, Dave Mayer of San Diego, Calif., and Kevin Mayer and his wife Becky in Le Mars; five sisters, Brenda Goodlett, Janice Merritt and her husband Randy, Carol Mayer, and Lisa Guinan and her husband, Pat, all of Omaha, Neb., and Sheryl Hall and her husband, Darin, of Lincoln, Neb.; his mother and father-in-law, Vernon and Edith Staab of Remsen; three sisters-in-law, Linda Hofmeister of Cedar Rapids, Diane Vanderlinde and her husband, Bob of Colton, S.D., and Pat Onken and her husband, Mike of Williamsburg; three brothers-in-law, Tony Staab and his wife, Nancy of Hubbard, Neb., Ron Staab of West Des Moines, and Steve Staab and his friend, Della Rae Ringel, of Remsen; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins

He was preceded in death by, his father, Albert; a sister Mary in infancy; his grandparents, one brother-in-law, Jerry Goodlett; and one nephew, Kenny Staab.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Matt Mayer, Keegan Staab, Will and Matt Vanderlinde, Erik and Nick Goodlett.
