Carol Irene Bates, 59, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at her home in Oskaloosa.

Carol Irene Bates was born Oct. 5, 1950, at Le Mars, the eldest of eight children born to Roman and Irene Plendl Ortmann. She was raised in Remsen, Iowa, and attended St. Mary's schools and graduated from Remsen St. Mary's High School in 1968. After high school, she worked at Farmers Savings Bank in Remsen until her marriage to Joseph F. Bates June 15, 1973, in Remsen. They moved to Oskaloosa in July 1973, and were associated with John Newman in the operation of the Newman Funeral Chapel. Following the death of John Newman in February 1979, she worked side by side with her husband in the funeral business that is now known as Bates Funeral Chapel until this past May when their close friend and longtime associate Michael Sytsma took over operation of the business.

She unselfishly shared of her heart, and time, talents, and treasures in countless ways, often in a leadership role, with her church, our community, civic groups, and the funeral profession.

Her family includes her husband, Joe Bates of Oskaloosa; her mother: Irene Ortmann of Remsen; her brothers and sisters: Randy (and Connie) Ortmann, Terri (and Steve) Garvin, all of Remsen, Steve Ortmann (and Viv Oliver) of Manhattan, Kan., Janet Ortmann, Sherri (and Terry) Truex, and Doug (and Nancy) Ortmann, all of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mary (and Mark) Lubben of Le Mars; many dear nieces and nephews; dear friends, the Ed and Dorothy Butler family, Bill and Linda Snakenberg family, the Tracy and Angie Gast family, and the staff at the funeral chapel. Additionally, numerous dear friends from church, community groups, and IFDA whom she loved.

She was preceded in death by her father; and her parents-in-law, Dr. W.W. and Brownie Bates.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Robert Busher officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 9 a.m. The rosary will be recited Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel following the Rosary to greet friends and relatives. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
