Loretta Kennedy, 85, of Le Mars, died Sunday May 23, 2010 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, following a brief illness.
The former Loretta M. Orban was born on a farm near Oyens, the daughter of Al and Rose (Kamp) Orban. When she was very young the family moved to a farm west of Le Mars and she attended rural school for a few years and then the family moved into Le Mars where she continued her elementary education at St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1942.
Loretta enrolled at National Business Training (N.B.T.) in Sioux City and following her graduation from there she went to work for Iowa Public Service in Le Mars.
Loretta married Cecil Kennedy on January 29, 1947 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed west of Le Mars from 1947 to 1976 and at that time retired from farming and moved into Le Mars. Her husband, Cecil, died May 3, 2002.
Loretta was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Church Guild. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for more than 60 years. She was also a longtime member of the Christian Mothers Society and the Catholic Ladies Club.
Loretta enjoyed traveling and in their retirement years she and Cecil went on many wonderful vacations together. Loretta enjoyed playing cards with friends and belonged to various card clubs.
She loved spending time with her family especially with the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter Kathleen West and her husband Boyd of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren: Paul West and his wife Courtney of Omaha, Neb., Patrick West and his wife Pati of Ottumwa, Anne West and her husband Asky Isdiyanto of Jakarta, Indonesia, and Alan West and his wife Sara of Omaha, Neb.; five great-grandchildren: Cecilia, Liam, Louis, Neiska, and Kathin; a sister, Mary Jane Gard and her husband Wayne of Lakewood, Calif.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Elaine Kennedy of Le Mars, Ralph and Mary Myers of Sioux City, Elaine Tolan of Omaha, Neb., and Gene and Dorothy Kennedy of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil; and two sisters, Evelyn Orban in childhood and Lois Schnepf.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a combined rosary by the Catholic Daughters of America and the Christian Mothers Society at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.
