Charles "Artie" Milbrodt, 75, of Akron, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Charles Arthur Milbrodt was born March 6, 1934, on a farm in Preston Township, rural Akron, the son of Herman and Meta (Frerichs) Milbrodt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township. He attended country school in Preston Township and later high school in Akron. He graduated from Akron High School in 1952.

Following his schooling, he farmed with his father. He also worked construction and worked for packinghouses.

He was united in marriage to Reta Reeves Schwinck Aug. 6, 1960, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township. He and Reta farmed on the family near Akron for many years.

They moved to Akron in 1999, but Artie continued to help on the farm until his health began to fail. For the past several years, Artie has been a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Artie was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron where he served on church council and taught Sunday school for many years. He had also served as a trustee for the Portland Township Cemetery for many years.

He was also a member of the Plymouth County Soil Conservation and Farm Bureau.

Family and farming was Artie's life and passion. Artie loved to watch sports, especially boxing and baseball and any sports his grandchildren participated in throughout the years. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins. Artie enjoyed reading the daily newspaper.

Survivors include his wife of more than 49 years, Reta, of Akron; daughters: Kimberly Schwinck Tacner (Dan), of Cabool, Mo., and their children, Angela March Akins and her family, Michael and Tara, Ben March (Sara) and their son, Austin, Jamie Payne (Michael) and their children, Christopher, Gregory, and Matthew, Daniel Tacner and his children Kaden and Raelee, and Norbert Tacner and his children Raylin and Ashlin; Susan Liston (Steve), of Omaha, Neb., and their children, Devon and Trent; Karen Milbrodt, of Atlanta, Ga., and her children, Estasha Goodwin and her daughter, Aasha and Avery Milbrodt; sons: Tom Milbrodt (Tina), of Akron, and their children, Nick, Emma, and Ian Milbrodt and Kayne Weaver; and Jon Milbrodt (Gina), of Le Mars, and their children Janessa, Grace, Alivia and Kaden. In addition he is survived by his brother: Robert Milbrodt, of Sioux City; four sisters: Dorothy Lane (Rodney), of Meckling, S.D., Vera Hansen, of Sioux City, Mary Miller (John), of Rock Valley, and Edie Small (Jim), of Akron; two brothers-in-law: Lloyd Reeves (Monica) and LeRoy Reeves; six sisters-in-law: Lela Ward, Delores Rismer (Cecil), Marge Milbrodt, Pat Milbrodt, Darlene Milbrodt and Joan Milbrodt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers: Henry, Clarence, Herman, Fred, William, George, Mervin, and Paul "Bernie"; and two sisters: Ruth Huebrock and Meta Milbrodt in infancy.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. today (Monday) at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Jean Morse officiated. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation was after 4 p.m. Sunday, with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
