Harriet Ann (Puetz) Langel, 83, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Harriet was born Oct. 18, 1925, on the family farm west of Merrill in Liberty Township, the daughter of John F. and Margaret E. (Hoss) Puetz. Her mother died when Harriet was very young, and her father later married Emma Freking. She graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School.

On Nov. 5, 1947, Harriet married Donald J. Langel at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. Following their marriage the couple farmed for many years north of Le Mars in Elgin Township. Her husband, Don, died July 7, 1997.

Harriet was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the church guild and the Christian Mother's Society. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially watching them compete in various sporting events. She also enjoyed playing cards, golfing and did needlework.

The most important roles in her life were that of being wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her children: Patricia (Jerry) Tentinger of Remsen, Diane (Larry) Proulx of Omaha, Neb., Margaret (Dick) Coates of Denver, Colo., Debora (Keith) Schiltz of Le Mars, Mike (Kelli) Langel of Le Mars, Jean Langel of Littleton, Colo., and Jolene (Bryan) Sedlacek of Omaha, Neb.; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister Maxine (John) Schnepf of Le Mars; two brothers: Gene (LaVerne) Puetz of Cedar Falls and Evon (Ann) Puetz of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother Emma Freking Puetz; her husband Don; a daughter, Jane, in infancy; a grandson, Jason Tentinger; and a sister-in-law, Marge Puetz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation after 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, where there was a Christian Mother's rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation resumed Monday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.

Harriet's funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
