Ronald J. Pausch, 69, of Whitewood, S.D., and formerly of rural Le Mars, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at the Spearfish Regional Hospital in Spearfish, S.D.
Ronald James Pausch was born June 5, 1940, on the family farm in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, rural Le Mars, the son of Harry H. Pausch, Sr. and Mabel E. (Sorenson-Blackmore) Pausch. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Johnson Township, rural Merrill. Ron attended school at Johnson Township #3. He worked on his parents farm for several years.
Ron always had a passion for training horses. As a young man he established Ron Pausch Stables in Sioux City. He assisted with training the legendary Shrine White Horse Patrol horses in Sioux City. He later accepted a position with Dr. Emil Erickson owner of Mihakota Farms near Sioux Falls, S.D., to oversee the training of riding horses. He worked for Mihakota Farms for 25 years.
In the late 1980s, Ron moved to Whitewood, S.D., where he once again opened Ron Pausch Stables. Again he worked with training riding horses, show horses and working horses. Ron has always worked as a professional horse trainer; having trained horses for local people, politicians, celebrities, and professional cowboys. Several years ago, Ron was honored with his picture in Time magazine for his work as a trainer.
Ron was married to Sandra Daggett July 3, 1968, in Elk Point, S.D. To this union a daughter, Barb was born.
Ron enjoyed his work and family. He enjoyed going coon hunting. He has always had dogs and cats and loved animals. His dog, "Cowboy," meant a lot to him.
Survivors include his daughter, Barb Young and her husband Dan and their children Ruby and Stella, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his companion of 20 years, Raynette Werlinger of Whitewood, S.D.; a brother, Harry H. Pausch Jr. and his wife Lois of Le Mars; two sisters, Delores Hansen and her husband David of Stanton, Neb., and Loretta Lubben and her husband Robert of Le Mars; stepchildren: Roxanne Strom of Dublin, Calif., Earl Strom Jr. of Elmira, N.Y., and Mitchell Strom and his wife Karen of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; Raynette's children: Liza (John) Zeestrten of St. Onge, S.D., David (Brenda) Werlinger of Whitewood, S.D., Nicole Werlinger of Sturgis, S.D., Heidi Werlinger of Gillette, Wyo., and Tyler Werlinger of Spearfish, S.D., and her 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Carlsen Funeral Home, Le Mars, with the Rev. Dan Gerrietts of Christ Lutheran Church, Le Mars, officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Johnson Township, rural Merrill. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today (Monday) at the Aldinger Funeral Home, Spearfish, S.D., with a 7 p.m. prayer Service Monday evening at the funeral home.
Wednesday morning visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home in Le Mars.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Hansen, Randy Lubben, Joe Ashmore, Ray Rodgers, Mark Brown, and Kent Brown.
