Minnie Ann Schmitt

Minnie Ann Schmitt, 91, was called home by our Lord on Tues., May 26, 2009 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Minnie was born on May 11, 1918 in rural Remsen, the daughter of Ernest and Anna (Klaschen) Koch. She was born on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen. Minnie attended rural schools and graduated from Remsen Public High School in 1936. She then attended Westmar College and secured her certification to teach school. While helping on the home farm, she taught all grades of country school for thirteen years. On May 21, 1949 she married Alfred A. Schmitt and moved to a farm five miles south of Remsen. An avid homemaker, Minnie was known for her baked goods including her decorated cookies sold at the church bazaars during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Working along side her husband, she helped on the family farm raising livestock and doing yard work and field work. She enjoyed raising a large garden each year as well as flower beds that decorated the farm. She and her husband were known for their beautifully maintained acreage and together enjoyed nature through a variety of songbirds. She was a devoted daughter, wife and mother and shared her talents willingly especially in helping prepare the traditional family Christmas Eve dinner held each year for over 40 years at her parents’ home. After her husband retired from farming in 1984, Minnie and Fred remained on the family farm and following the death of her husband on June 14, 2000, she moved into Remsen in 2001 where she remained active and prided herself in receiving her drivers license at age 90. After celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends on May 11, 2008, Minnie suffered a fall. She entered Happy Siesta Health Care Center on May 17, 2008. There she enjoyed daily visits by her family and friends. She was well respected by the staff for her gentleness, smile and concern for others.

Minnie was an active member in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle and TOPS Club.
