Richard D. "Dick" Rolfs Sr, 88, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Richard David Rolfs was born May 23, 1921, at Sioux City, the son of Thomas and Edith (Beard) Rolfs. He graduated from Lawton High School and then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., for a brief time.

On Sept. 30, 1944, Dick and Irene Lucille Hanson were united in marriage at South Sioux City, Neb. The couple farmed near Lawton until moving to Le Mars in 1950. Dick worked as a painter in the Le Mars area for many years with Becker Brothers Painting. He later went to work for Myers Painting in Sioux City. Dick retired in 1983. Irene died Aug. 12, 1995.

Dick was always there to lend a helping hand to his neighbors or anyone that needed it. He enjoyed meeting and visiting with others.

He is survived by his sons, Richard Rolfs Jr. of Le Mars and Gary Rolfs and his wife Mary of Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren Dustin Rolfs of Vancouver, Wash., and Meredith, Charlie and Lauren Rolfs of Rochester, Minn.; sisters Elsie Foster of Sioux City, and Shirley Meidinger of Jamestown, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Irene; son Cort Rolfs; a brother and his wife Claus and Janet Rolfs; his sisters and their spouses Esther and Wesley Nelson, Dorothy and Frederick Kaup, Edith and Paul Rayburn; and brothers-in-law Homer Foster and Roland Meidinger.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The Rev. Jason Larson will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
