Wallace Baack, 91, of Hinton, died suddenly Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Wallace Walter Baack was born Sept. 19, 1914, on the family farm in Liberty Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Henry and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bock) Baack. Wally was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His parents farmed west of Merrill, where Wally received his education at Liberty Consolidated School.

In 1948, Wally moved to Hinton. In his early years he worked for the Hinton Telephone Exchange for "Doc" Jones. Wally was very musically gifted. He worked as a self-employed piano tuner for many years.

Wally played the accordion for the "Timberoogens" on KSCJ for several years. He also played for the local dance bands "Rythmatics" and "The Lakes Band." Wally played the pipe organ for St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill for over 50 years. He enjoyed playing the organ daily at his home and had played at church the Sunday before his passing. He enjoyed raising violets and was a lover of dogs; in particular "Midge."

Survivors include his two nieces: Judy and Ed Nelson of Sioux City, and Lucille and Wes Lancaster of Kansas City; and a nephew, Wayne and Ester Pageler of Florida; and several grand- and great-grand-nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bock) Baack; two brothers, Paul and Louis Baack; a sister, Mathilda Nelson; and a niece, Shirley Heien.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Monday) at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Interment was in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitationwas after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m.

Pallbearers were Wayne Heien, Scott Nelson, Bryan Nelson, Mark Lancaster, David Lancaster and Tom Lancaster.
