Lois Boylan, 96, of Le Mars, died Sunday Feb. 26, 2006, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Lois Elaine Scace was born Jan. 9, 1910, on a farm in Baker Township, O'Brien County, Iowa, the daughter of Fay and Bethany Elizabeth (Beers) Scace. The family farmed near Bigelow, Minn., and in 1916 moved to Corwith, Iowa, and operated the Corwith Telephone Co. She graduated from Corwith High School and Iowa State College in home economics. She taught in high schools in Akron, Colo., and Hubbard, Iowa. She married Wendell H. Boylan of Hubbard on April 21, 1934, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
In 1935 they moved to Le Mars with his parents, S.S. and Bessie Boylan, and sister Harriet. She worked with her husband and family at the B&B Store for nearly 40 years. She had a passion for music that ranged from a teenager playing the saxaphone for silent movies to retirement years when they both enjoyed the Hammond organ. Vacations in Florida led her to begin her extraordinary seashell collection. Later they spent their winters together in Texas, playing music, until her husband died in 1989. She then stayed in Iowa as she loved the winters and snow.
Her hobbies included leather crafts, knitting, sewing and recovering furniture. She was a founding member of TTT Chapter AO in 1943.
Lois was an exceptional story teller. Her wisdom, emotion and expressions captivated her family. With quick wit and brilliance she spent many hours telling stories of her life and the many that surrounded her. Her family was truly her pride and joy. Maggie was one of the most recent treasures added to her life. Her little canine 4-legged friend provided entertainment and adventure to her life each day.
She also wrote special poems to celebrate birthdays and holidays for her family. Her talent with words and a pen was unique and will be cherished by many. She emphasized the need for education for all.
She will be missed by her son Hugh Boylan and his wife Carol of Le Mars, and all of her family members including eight grandchildren: Christie Graettinger and her husband, Tim of Cherokee, Wendy Boylan of Le Mars, Julie Arens and her husband, Chris of Remsen, Scott Boylan and his wife, Mona of Le Mars, Mark Boylan and his wife, Camilla, Lisa Katsuki and her husband, Rusty, Anne Clohessy and her husband, Steve, all of Boise, Idaho and Jonathan Boylan and his wife, Sally of Cairo, Egypt; sister Betty Bestick of Fort Dodge; daughter-in-law Margie Stoy of Boise, Idaho; 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband Wendell H. Boylan; son Richard F. Boylan; daughter in infancy Patricia; sister Dorothy Cook, and sister-in-law Harriet Kovaleske.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson of Le Mars United Methodist Church officiating. Family and friends are invited to return to the Carlsen Funeral Home Fellowship Center to join the family for a luncheon and fellowship time.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Christie Graetinger, Wendy Boylan, Julie Arens, Scott Boylan, Mark Boylan, Lisa Katsuki, Anne Cohlessy, and Jonathan Boylan. Honorary pallbearers will be Darwin and Julie Dirks and Vern Varenhorst.
