AKRON, Iowa -- Gladys Myrtle Toben, 87, of Akron died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Akron Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. Curtis Matson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mrs. Toben was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Cottonwood, Minn., the daughter of Fred and Katherine (Knecht) Albright.

She married John Toben on Dec. 30, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. Along with being a homemaker, she helped on the farm east of Westfield, Iowa, until the couple's retirement in 1966, when they moved to an acreage in Westfield. In 1971 they moved into Akron, where Mrs. Toben lived until entering Akron Care Center in 1998.

Mrs. Toben was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. In her free time, she loved to garden, loved spending time with animals, dancing, and after entering Akron Care Center, playing the hand bells with the Akron Care Center Bell Ringers.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Hasenbank and her husband, Wilbur of Westfield; two sons, Darrell Toben and his wife, Joellen, and Martin Toben and his wife, JoAnn, all of Westfield; two sisters, Eva Taylor of Redman, Ore., and Elma Morison of South Beloit, Ill.; a stepbrother, Harvey Johnson of Rockford, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sons, Vernon in infancy and Dwight Toben; two sisters; a stepsister; and two grandsons, Joseph Toben and Brian Hasenbank.
