LE MARS, Iowa -- Robert Russell, 72, of Le Mars died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Robert Charles Russell was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Le Mars, to Charles and Leona (Braun) Russell. He grew up on the family farm in Johnson Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa. He graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Carol Lade on April 14, 1951, at Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill, Iowa. He enlisted in the Iowa Air National Guard on April 1, 1951, and served to Nov. 16, 1952.

Following his discharge from the service, he returned to the family farm in Plymouth County. The couple later built the first large-scale chicken operation in Plymouth County that housed more than 5,000 chickens. He continued farming and raising chickens until his retirement in 1986. During his retirement, he worked for Life Skills Training Center for several years.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a 50-year member of American Legion Wasmer Post 241. He enjoyed reading and watching television. He also treasured the time he spent visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Russell of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Gary and Diane Russell of Bonifay, Fla.; three daughters, Deb Frerichs of Le Mars, Pam and her husband, Al Hummel of Indianola, Iowa, and Dawn Miller of Windsor, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Russell of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Gene and Edna Russell of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Leona Russell; a son, Mark Russell; a daughter, Kim Russell; and a son-in-law, Steve Frerichs.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Russell, Joshua Hummel, Ben Hummel, Cory Frerichs, Nicholas Miller and Joshua Petersen.
