REMSEN, Iowa -- Jerome "Jerry" Roder, 81, of Remsen died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Revs. Terry Roder and Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Jerome "Jerry" Roder was born April 29, 1921, in rural Granville, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Boever) Roder. He was raised and educated in the Granville area. He was a farm laborer in the Granville area prior to entering the U.S. Army in September 1942. He served in northern France where he was wounded on Sept. 13, 1944, and was honorably discharged in October 1945.

On Nov. 27, 1950, he married Pauline "Peg" Frank at Remsen. They farmed near Remsen until 1988, when he retired on the farm because of Alzheimer's disease. During the 1970s and 1980s, he tended bar at the Avalon Ballroom, VFW Club and Golden Pheasant, all in Remsen. He had been a resident of Indian Hills Care Center since November 1990.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and past church choir member, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 3328, was a charter member of the VFW and Legion Color Guard until 1988. He was an ASCS Remsen Township committee member for 25 years and did farm measuring for the ASCS government programs in Remsen and Meadow Townships for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Peg of Sioux City; three daughters, Susan and her husband, Fred Brown of Remsen, Gerianne and her husband, Tom Olson, and Janice Roder, all of Sioux City; six sons, Patrick, Michael and Steven and his wife, Sandi, all of Remsen, David at Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City, Nicholas, and Daniel and his wife, Judy, all of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Joe (Loretta) Siefke of Monrovia, Calif; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Al (Sylvia) Roder of Remsen, Mrs. Vitus (Helen) Wiederholt of Sioux City, and Lorna and her husband, Leonard Majeres of Orange City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Thomas Klein; five brothers, Norbert, Zeno, Al, William and Joe; two sisters, Mrs. George (Agnes) Shirkey and Mrs. Anthony (Barbara) Nacke.

Pallbearers will be Jason and Sara Brown, Justin De Vries, Matthew Klein, Nichole Olson and Jessica Roder.

K.C. honorary pallbearers will be David, Gerald and Isidore Harpenau, Paul Lang, Donald Ortmann and Paul Pick.
