Ethel Stellingwerf, 89, of Le Mars, died Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Village of Le Mars.

Ethel Vera Smith was born March 8, 1916, in Le Mars, the daughter of Robert and Rose (Ruckle) Smith. She was raised and educated in Le Mars. Ethel was united in marriage to Bert Stellingwerf on Sept. 4, 1933 ,at Fort Dodge. The couple lived in Orange City for a couple of years before settling in Le Mars to raise their family. Ethel enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her children.

Ethel and Bert where charter member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. She enjoyed arranging flowers at the church that she grew in her flower garden. For many years Ethel could always be counted on to provide homemade pies for church activities. Church and family had always been a very important part of her life.

Survivors include her three children, Bert and his wife, Jan Stellingwerf of Le Mars, Walt Stellingwerf of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kay Johnson and her husband ,Clayton of Worthington, Minn.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bert in 1996, a daughter-in-law, Marlys Stellingwerf, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be a 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Dale Fopma officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present after 6 p.m. to greet friends, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Russell Folkers, Scott Taylor, Jason Stellingwerf, Steve Stellingwerf, Paul Wickham, William Johnson, and Jay Meyer.
