Margaret Jean Manning, 81, of Le Mars, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Margaret Jean Dennler was born May 7, 1927, at Le Mars, the daughter of Alvin and Margaret (Robertson) Dennler. Jean was baptized at the Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Le Mars. She attended country school at Washington No. 4 and later attended and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1945. Following high school, Jean continued her education at Western Union College in Le Mars where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at a country school northeast of Kingsley and later at the Brunsville school.

Jean was united in marriage to Milo Manning Dec. 9, 1951, at Le Mars. Milo and Jean were the parents of seven children. As their children were young, Jean was a stay-at-home mother. When all the children were in school, Jean went back to work. She had worked in the dietary department for Le Mars Central High School, Harker's, and the Plymouth Manor Care Center until her retirement.

Jean enjoyed camping, cooking, watching birds, and gardening. Her greatest joy in life was her children and later in life her grandchildren. She loved having her children and grandchildren visit. Her life was very family oriented.

Survivors include five sons, Nick Manning and his wife Marlene of Le Mars, Bob Manning and his wife Ginny of Marcus, Milo Dean Manning of Le Mars, Larry Manning of Fredric, Wis., and Dale Manning and his wife Teresa of Merrill; a daughter, Donna Mamey of Palm Springs, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betsy Schweitzberger of Kingsley and Gladys Zieger of St. Lawarence, S.D.; a brother, Gale Dennler and his wife Idalene of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Margaret (Robertson) Dennler; her husband Milo on April 26, 2008; a son Thomas Manning in 1989; and two brothers-in-law, Herb Zieger and Harold Schweitzberger.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ of Le Mars with the Rev. Jan Christensen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations with the family present will be after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 5 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will continue Monday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Ashley Manning, Scott Manning, Shane Manning, Troy Manning, J. D. Manning, Ethan Manning, Shawn Schiefen, and Dawn Hoebelheinrich. Honorary casket bearers will be Holly Earle-Schultze, Monica Siegrist, and Amber Busche.
