LE MARS, Iowa -- Barbara J. Powell, 54, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004, at her residence following a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 4:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Barbara Jo Kock was born Sept. 15, 1949, in Le Mars, to Clarence and Gladys (Steinfadt) Kock. She attended Le Mars Community Schools, graduating in 1967. She continued her education at Nettleton Business College and graduated in 1968. She was employed with the University of Iowa in the physical therapy department.

On June 14, 1969, she and James Powell were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. After living in Iowa City and Sioux Falls, S.D., they returned to Le Mars in 1977, where she was a homemaker and an active community leader.

She was an involved member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA. She also was a member of the National T.T.T. Society, Iowa Chapter DY and Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She served on the Plymouth County Historical Museum board, Ice Cream Day committee and the LCHS Athletic and Music Boosters. She founded and served for 11 years as president of the Le Mars Community School District Alumni Association and coordinated the Decades of Excellence All School Reunion held in 2000.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Dr. James E. Powell of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Dale Hurt of Carbondale, Colo.; a son, Adam Powell and his fiancee, Wendy Pitts of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Alyson Powell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Mike Powell at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa; granddaughters, Madeline and Danielle Hurt, both of Carbondale, Colo.; her parents, Clarence and Gladys Kock of Le Mars; two sisters and their husbands, Diane and Bill Widick of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Connie and Dean DeKoter of Spencer, Iowa; father-in-law, Floyd Powell of Le Mars; sisters-in-law, Barbara Powell of Denver, Colo., Dorothy Powell of Rockford, Ill., and Patricia Ames and her husband, Dr. Robert Frenier of Chicago, Ill.; nieces and nephews, Shane and Kristen Grego of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Trent and Tracy DeKoter of North Liberty, Iowa, Kaci and Peter Brim of Altoona, Iowa, Amber and BJ Schumacher of Forest Lake, Minn., and Kara DeKoter of

Norwalk, Iowa; great-nieces, Jaeda, Payton and Lauren; and a great-nephew, Jordan.

She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Bernice Powell; grandparents; and a great-nephew, Ethan DeKoter.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Le Mars, or the Barbara Kock Powell Endowment Fund through the Le Mars Community School District Alumni Association.
