LE MARS, Iowa -- Vera McClain, 88, of Le Mars passed away Friday, June 20, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson of First United Methodist Church of Le Mars officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will begin 9 a.m. today and continue until service time at the funeral home.

Vera Florence Melton was born Jan. 8, 1915, on a farm near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of John Merle and Elma (Shafer) Melton. She attended country school and later boarded in Mt. Pleasant to graduate from high school in 1933.

On Feb. 19, 1934, Vera and George McClain were married in Mt. Pleasant, where the couple made their home. Vera and her family then moved to Houston, Texas. Vera moved to Le Mars 25 years ago to take care of her mother and aunt Cora. For the past month, she was a resident at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Vera enjoyed lifelong learning. Her favorite hobbies included crossword puzzles, cards and games. She loved to read and her family remembers her extensive vocabulary, mostly due to the fact that her mother and aunt were teachers. Vera cherished her 11 grandchildren and was fortunate to raise Shari and Bubba. She held a special place in her heart for God's angel child, Joe.

Vera will be lovingly remembered by her five children, William McClain of Mason City, Iowa, Nancy Sharp and her husband, Clarence of Houston, Texas, Mike McClain and his wife, Sandy of Manvel, Texas, Pat McClain and his wife, Michiko of Santa Maria, Calif., and Dennis McClain and his wife, Sharon of Merrill, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don Melton of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Merle.
