Russell D. Kroepel, 67, of Le Mars and formerly of the Ireton area, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.

Russell Dean Kroepel was born March 10, 1939, at Preston Township, Plymouth County, the son of Otto and Anna (Frerichs) Kroepel. He attended country school near his home prior to graduating from high school in Ireton in 1957. Russell enlisted in the United States Air Force. He later received his honorable discharge and returned to Iowa. Russell attended the University of Iowa and received his degree in pharmacology.

Russell and Margaret Brodie were married Sept. 3, 1972, in Las Vegas, Nev. Russ worked as a pharmacist in Arizona as well as several towns in Iowa. Russell retired from Family Pharmacy in Le Mars in October of 2005.

In years past he was active in Jaycees, Elks, Sertoma. He was presently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden.

Russ enjoyed work on his "hobby farm" and was an avid antique collector.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of Le Mars; daughter, Katy Athens and her husband, Brian of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Tom Kroepel and his wife, Kathy of Shenandoah, and Todd McGranahan and his wife, Cindy of Le Mars; six grandchildren Todd Russell, Cory, Sarah, Ryan, Kelli and Sam; and a great-granddaughter, Melody Rose.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother and sister; and brothers Melvin, Alfred and Harvey.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The Rev. Todd Bunge of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service set for 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
