LE MARS, Iowa -- Harold M. Wanderscheid, 77, of Le Mars died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmar Post 241. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 4 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Wanderscheid was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Dell Rapids, S.D., the son of Martin and Cecelia (Schiltz) Wanderscheid. His family moved to Le Mars when he was a child. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the L.S.T. 822 in the South Pacific during World War II.

He married Rita Pick of Remsen on Nov. 26, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple made their home in Le Mars. He began his 40-year career in the grocery business working at O.P. Skaggs, Swansons and then Hy-Vee Grocery Stores in Sheldon and Le Mars. He was honored as the first Chamber Employee of the Month, and received the award for the second time on his retirement.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and American Legion Wasmar Post 241 of Le Mars. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing cards. He and Rita played cards in the Catholic Daughters Pinochle Marathon for many years.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Richard and Connie Wanderscheid of Sioux City; four daughters and their husbands, Margie and Gerald Hodgson of Le Mars, Barbara and Tony Schneider of Osakis, Minn., Janice and Michael Beauregard of Coral Springs, Fla., and Deborah and Marlin Nelson of Sergeant Bluff; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret Boetger of Le Mars, Mary Hodge of Canoga Park, Calif., Bernetta Ernst of Le Mars, Elizabeth and her husband, Elmer Ernst of Le Mars, and Rita Bay of Le Mars; four brothers and their wives, Paul and Ethel of Sioux City, Martin and Arlene of Le Mars, and Dale and Lee and Jerry and Peggy, all of Amarillo, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Julia Buccola.
