LE MARS, Iowa -- Edward J. "Ed" Sitzmann, 84, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at his home in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Andrew Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, with military rites conducted by the American Legion of Le Mars and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Remsen, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., immediately followed by a 4th Degree wake service, at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Ed was born May 26, 1919, on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Edward and Agnes (Carel) Sitzmann. He grew up in Lincoln Township south of Le Mars. He graduated from Trinity Catholic High School in Sioux City. In 1942, during World War II, he entered the U.S. Army and served for 3 1/2 years in Hawaii and the South Pacific with the Coast Artillery Service.
On May 13, 1943, Edward Sitzmann Jr. married Agatha L. Nuebel at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Long Beach, Calif. At the end of World War II, he returned to the Le Mars area and owned and operated Sitzmann's Station south of Neptune, Iowa. He then became actively engaged in cattle feeding and farming. After farming for 30 years in America Township, the couple moved to Le Mars.
Mr. Sitzmann was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Holy Name Society. He had been a member of other organizations for more than 50 years, including a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466 in Le Mars; a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Garrigan Assembly in Sioux City; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Joseph Dickman Post 3325 in Remsen, Iowa; and American Legion, Wasmer Post 241 in Le Mars. Mr. Sitzmann had previously been the parish director of St. Joseph's Church for three years and had also served as a school board member for Gehlen Catholic Schools. While he was engaged in feeding cattle, Ed was an active member of the Plymouth County Cattlefeeders Association. He was also a member of the A.S.C. Committee and a member of the board of Berkley Bedell's Agriculture Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Aggie of Le Mars; eight sons, David Sitzmann and his wife, Margaret of Le Mars, Charles Sitzmann and his wife, Ann of Rogers, Ark., Mark Sitzmann and his wife, Lana of Greeley, Colo., Neil Sitzmann and his wife, Terri of Tucson, Ariz., Roger Sitzmann and his wife, Peg of Le Mars, Eugene Sitzmann and his wife, Betty of Le Mars, Peter Sitzmann of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Jay Sitzmann and his wife, Christine of Storm Lake, Iowa; two daughters, Ann Marie Kurth and her husband, Dan of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Sandra Sitzmann and Lawrence Kennedy of Polson, Mont.; 32 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley Sitzmann and his wife, Louise of Cherokee, Iowa, and Paul Sitzmann and his wife, Barb of rural Hinton, Iowa; four sisters, Marge Gilligan of Arlington, Texas, Gerri Gengler and her husband, Gerald of Le Mars, Annette Sieverding and her husband, Harry of Madisonville, La., and Alyce Reuter and her husband, Jack of Le Mars; and many nieces and
nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Doug; four brothers, Bill, Dale, Alfred and Howard; and two sisters, Joyce Sitzmann in infancy and Mary Pniak.
