Harley E. Small, 76, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Revs. David Morris and Kathy Olson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Harley E. Small was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Elk Point, S.D., the son of Harley D. and Eula (Mills) Small. He was raised in the Akron-Westfield area. He attended school in Akron and graduated from high school.
He married Margaret L. Hendricks on Feb. 14, 1944, in Cherokee, Iowa. They moved to Sioux City in 1957. He owned and operated Small Insurance Agency in Sioux City for more than 40 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sioux City and the Triangle Masonic Lodge 643 A.F. and A.M. in Leeds. He sponsored a men's slow pitch team in Sioux City for many years. He enjoyed boating and fishing as well as gardening, being around friends and family and having coffee with his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Sioux City; two sons, Kerry D. Small and his wife, Barb, and Shawn Small and his wife, Randee, all of Sioux City; a daughter, Sandy Carlson and her husband, Lynn of Merrill, Iowa; two brothers, Donald Small of Sioux City, and Loren Small of Fallon, Nev.; three sisters, Lois Barr of Sioux City, Lola Johnson of Meckling, S.D., and Laura Jensen of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Christine, Eric, Jacob, Shane and Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Amanda; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Harley L. and Charles E.; and a sister, Bernice.
Pallbearers will be Mike Word, Eric Carlson, Jacob Small, Johnny Johnson, Dick Johnson, Dennis Lowell and Merle Lowell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim McClintock, Bob Bracht, Don Wolcott, Bob Wermes, Rich Taylor and Le Roy Learing.
