LE MARS, Iowa -- Tom E. Skram, 63, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in St. Margaret's Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, with a vigil for the deceased at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Schuchert Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

Mr. Skram was born July 26, 1940, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Shirley and Mary Margaret (McLaughlin) Skram. He graduated from Holy Family High School in Mason City in 1958. He then went on to further his education at Loras College, graduating with a business and education degrees in 1962.

He married Janice Murphy on Sept. 8, 1962, in Dubuque, Iowa. He worked for 3-M for 10 years, before going to work at Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars. He taught physical education and business education. He was the varsity men's basketball and cross country coach from 1974 to 1989. In 1992, the couple became the proud owners of a Subway franchise in Le Mars.

He was a member of the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, United Way, Gehlen J-Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Skram of Spirit Lake; two daughters and their husbands, Julia and David Peters and Cynthia and James Staver; three sons and their wives, Tom and Lisa Skram Jr., Peter and Cheryl Skram and Michael and Lori Skram; five sisters, Virginia Lannon, Kathleen Jenkins, Christine Sahn, Mary Lynn Demmer and Jeanie Tomy; two brothers, Steve Skram and John Skram; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Catholic School Foundation of the Diocese of Sioux City.
