REMSEN, Iowa -- Irene E. Schmid, 90, of Remsen died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran church, LCMS in Remsen, with the Rev. Robert Eggers officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Marcus, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Irene was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Louise (Kammeier) Trometer. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Merrill on Jan. 28, 1912. She was confirmed on March 28, 1926. Irene was raised in the Merrill area and graduated from Liberty Consolidated School in 1930. She attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and graduated from Morningside College with a teaching degree in 1932. She then taught in the Merrill area.
She married Fred Schmid on March 31, 1934, in Elk Point, S.D. She was a homemaker. They farmed near Merrill until 1940. They then moved to the Remsen and Kingsley, Iowa, area, where they continued farming. Fred died July 30, 1997. Irene moved into Remsen in the fall of 1997. She had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center since Dec. 9, 1999.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Oaks Hobby Club. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing and had many hobbies. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Lynette and Roger Wilson of Paullina, Iowa, and Donna and Lanny Nairn of Cherry Hill, N.J.; two sons and their wives, Lynn and Mary Schmid of Longville, Minn., and Gary and Sandy Schmid of Remsen; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Edna and Verdine Ehrp of Remsen; and five sisters-in-law, Mary Trometer of Merrill, Freida Lake of Le Mars, Marjorie Schmid of Merrill, Eunice Schmid of Kingsley, and Roberta Schmid of Two Harbors, Minn.
She also was preceded in death by a son, David; a sister, Verna Radloff; a brother, Glen Trometer; a sister-in-law; and six brothers-in-law.
