LE MARS, Iowa -- Elizabeth "Betty" Singer, 84, of Le Mars, formerly of Merrill, Iowa, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at The Abbey of Le Mars following a brief illness with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Elizabeth Fidelia Heissel was born Feb. 4, 1918, on a farm near Merrill, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Mairose) Heissel. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. Following her education, she assisted her family at home.

On Jan. 14, 1941, Betty and Archie N. Singer were united in marriage at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Merrill. The couple resided in Merrill, where she was a homemaker. Archie passed away Dec. 31, 1986. She remained in Merrill for a few years before moving to an apartment in Le Mars. She moved to The Abbey of Le Mars on July 14, 1994.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Garry Wright of Carroll, Iowa; a grandson and his wife, Mark and Natalie Wright of Maple Grove, Minn.; a granddaughter, Amy Wright and her fiance, Joe Wood of Nevada, Iowa; a great-granddaughter, Faith Wood of Nevada; three sisters, Luella Baack of Milford, Iowa, Olivia Muir of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Lihudis of Le Mars; two brothers and their wives, Francis and Joan Heissel of Le Mars, and Cyril and Jan Heissel of Storm Lake, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William.
