LE MARS, Iowa -- Alvin Henry Schwanke, 89, of Le Mars, former longtime Climbing Hill, Iowa, area farmer, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume 8 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Alvin was born Sept. 2, 1912, in Cummings County, Neb., the son of John William and Emilea D. (Kersten) Schwanke. He grew up in Cummings County.

On June 15, 1935, he married Corrine M. Hanslip of Fremont, Neb., in Fremont. Following their marriage, the couple lived for a few years in Nebraska before moving to the Climbing Hill area in 1940. They farmed for many years. They moved to Le Mars in 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Corrine "Corky" Schwanke of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Alvin Richard and Joyce Schwanke of Fremont; a daughter and her husband, Lois and Jim Scheitler of Le Mars; six grandchildren and their spouses, Lynn and Julie Schwanke and Kevin and Patti Schwanke, all of Fremont, Rob and Joyce Scheitler, Jan and Mike Feller and Marc and Lisa Scheitler, all of Le Mars, and Joyce and Dale Bennett of Spencer, Iowa; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Jeanette and Joe Jindra of Fremont; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hilda Larsen and Ida Bohling; and two brothers, Herbert in childhood and Clarence Schwanke.

Pallbearers will be Lynn Schwanke, Kevin Schwanke, Rob Scheitler, Marc Scheitler, Mike Feller and Dale Bennett.
