Marion F. Thiel, 69, of Remsen, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Marion F. Thiel was born Nov. 24, 1939, at Remsen, the son of John G. "Jack" & Lucille (Tracey) Thiel. Marion was raised in Remsen and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School, from which he graduated in 1958. He then worked for his father at Jack Thiel Repair in Remsen.

On March 30, 1960 he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard submarines and was honorably discharged on March 29, 1963. He then returned to Remsen and worked for his father. In the fall of 1964 he enrolled at Iowa State Technical Institute at Ames, and graduated in 1966 with as associate degree in electronics. He was then employed with Sangamo Electric, whose corporate headquarters were at Springfield, Ill. He was stationed at Springfield, San Diego, Calif., Long Beach, Calif., Charleston, S.C., Boston, Mass., Denver, Colo., and overseas in Japan and England.

In the fall of 1974 he returned to Remsen to again work for his father. In 1980, after the death of his father, he took over management operations of the business. He had been a resident of Happy Siesta since Sept. 21, 2007.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen.

Survivors include four brothers, John E. "Buck", Bernard J. "Shorty", Robert and his wife Mary Kay, all of Remsen and Daniel "Butch" of Le Mars; seven nephews; five great-nieces and four great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Thiel and Florence Thiel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Monday), at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casketbearers will be Robert, Mike, Brad, Matt & Mitch Thiel and Steve Klein.
