Gertrude “Gert” Uithoven, 78, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 04, 2008 at the Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008, with the family present at 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Gertrude Uithoven was born May 5, 1930 in Fairview, South Dakota, the daughter of Gerrit and Jennie (Reinalda) Willemsen. She was raised on a farm near Fairview and attended country school near Inwood, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to James Uithoven on August 11, 1950 in Stickney, South Dakota. After living in several communities in South Dakota, they settled in Akron, Iowa in 1967. Gert worked for several areas business through the years, including Harker’s Meats, Custom Coils, Otis Radio, and as a nurse’s aide for the State Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota and the Akron Care Center.

Gert was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. She was active in the W.E.L.C.A. and sang in the church choir for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, trips to visit family and friends, camping, and doing needle point. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her 4 children: Gerald Uithoven and his wife Yvonne of Omaha, NE, Barbara Schiefen and her significant other, Eugene Clark of Minneapolis, MN, Gloria Melton and her husband Patrick of Belleue, NE, and Bradley Uithoven and his wife Robin of Minneapolis, MN, 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Winnie Machiela of Holland, MI, and Anne Uithoven of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law: Carrie Kaus of Marion, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; 3 sisters: Winnie Willemsen, Jeannette Willemsen, and Hermina Jaeger; a brother: Everett Willemsen; and two grandchildren: Michelle and Michael Rohlfs.
