LONGTIME SHERIFF SCHOLER DEAD

Frank S. Scholer, 82, LeMars, former longtime Plymouth county sheriff, died Tuesday (May 1, 1979) at Floyd Valley Hospital after an extended illness. He was admitted April 20 to the hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic church in LeMars with Rev. George McFadden officiating. Burial will be in LeMars Memorial Cemetery under direction of the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home.

Mr. Scholer was born July 12, 1896, in Remsen to Nick and Lena Nothem Scholer. He was a lifelong Plymouth county resident. He graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s high school.

His marriage to Emma Theilen took place June 1, 1922, at Slayton, Minn.

He served as Plymouth county sheriff for 29 years, the longest sheriff’s term on record. His tenure from 1936 to 1965, when he retired. He served as bailiff in district court following his retirement.

Mr. Scholer was a member of St. James Catholic church, Wasmer post 241, American Legion, Soldier’s relief commission, Iowa Sheriff’s Assn., and Last Man’s Club. He was an army veteran of World War I.

Survivors are his wife, Emma; two sons, Darrell of Omaha and Eugene R. of LeMars; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Catherine Scholer, Remsen.
