Esther M. Mungon, 91, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2008 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Esther Marie Mungon was born February 27, 1917 on the family farm in Soldier Township in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Hilda (Frahm) Langholdt. She was baptized into the Christian faith. Early in her childhood, she moved with her family to Le Mars, Iowa. Esther was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Central High School in 1935.

She was united in marriage to Elmer L. Gerdes on October 31, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Esther worked for various businesses in Le Mars until they moved to Akron. After working for a few businesses in Akron, she went to work for First National Bank in Akron in 1947. She worked for the bank for over 35 years, retiring in 1982. Elmer passed away May 14, 1970 in Omaha, Nebraska.

She later married Donald Mungon on May 31, 1975 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. After her retirement, they wintered in Arizona for 6 years. Donald passed away December 31, 1990 in Akron.

Esther was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron having served with W.E.L.C.A. for many years. She has been a continuous member of the Hoschler American Legion Auxiliary for over 61 years, having served as treasurer for 12 years. She was also active in the Akron Senior Center. She enjoyed doing craft work over the years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her step children: Judy Carlson Towns and her husband Craig of Omaha, NE, Terry Mungon and his wife Cathy of Irvine, CA, and John Carlson of Omaha, NE; 4 step grandsons: Jonas Carlson and his wife Heather of Seattle, WA, Jay Carlson and his wife Sally of Des Moines, IA, Jordan Carlson and Kristen of San Diego, CA, and Vincent Mungon of Riverside, CA; 3 step great grandson; 1 step great granddaughter; 6 nephews: Dennis Langholdt and his wife Mary Kay of Boone, IA, Terry Langholdt and his wife Dianne of Cherokee, IA, Randy Langholdt and his wife Judy of Glendale, AZ, Richard Langholdt and his wife Donata of Iowa City, IA, Lance Lindgren and his wife Karen of Mission, SD, and Gary Lindgren and his wife Sharon of Mason City, IA; 2 nieces: Linda Harden and her husband Ross of Le Mars, IA, and Patricia Berendes and her husband Steve of Red Oak, IA; 3 sisters-in-law: Jeanette Langholdt of Cherokee, IA, Marilyn Carlberg and her husband Dick of O’Fallon, IL, and Eileen Mungon of Weatherford, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, her husband, Donald; her parents; a brother: Clarence Langholdt; and a sister-in-law: Nina Featherston.
