HAWARDEN - Clarence Harms, 94, of Hawarden, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at his residence.

Clarence Harms was born Feb. 2, 1914 to John and Katherina (Rewerts) Harms near Le Mars. He attended country school near Le Mars. Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and North Africa from 1942-1945.

Clarence was united in marriage to Baulah Riphagen on Dec. 27, 1951 in Sioux Center. Together they moved from Le Mars to Hawarden in 1952. Clarence owned and operated the Hawarden Hatchery which became Harms Food and Supply in 1963. He sold the business in 1974 and stayed on as part-time help until 1979. Clarence enjoyed fishing, woodworking, horse, dogs and especially spending time with family.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Baulah; one son, Stanley (Valerie) Harms of Clinton, Township, Mich.; one daughter, Cheryl (Craig) Colton of Stillwater, Minn.; two grandchildren: Jason Harms and John Colton; one sister, Hilda Harms of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jurgen Harms; brothers: Carl, Fred, Alfred and Donald Harms; sisters: Meta Eilers, Kate Carstenson and Theresa Engel.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Frederick R. Jordan officiating. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
