Donald Haage, 73, of Le Mars, died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Donald Gene Haage was born March 13, 1933, on the family farm in Johnson Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Fred and Johanna (Kruse) Haage. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township. He attended country school in Johnson Township until he began helping is father on the farm. Don served his country in the United States Army from November 1953 to October 1955. He was stationed in Germany for 1 1/2 years.

He was united in marriage to Doris Baack on Nov. 9, 1956, at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig. The couple farmed east of Akron in Johnson Township and later east of Craig. In 1963, they moved to the Haage farm west of Brunsville, where they farmed for many years. In 1996, they moved to Le Mars, but Don remained active on the farm up until his passing.

Don had also worked part time for Culligan Water in Hawarden, for many years. He also was an oil salesman and district manager for Archer Petroleum for over 35 years.

Don was a longtime member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Craig, where he had served as a deacon and church council member. He was a long time member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville, where he was a past commander.

He enjoyed traveling to many countries throughout the world. He loved to visiting with friends and family, playing cards, and dancing. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all their activities. But most of all, he loved farming and working the land. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of over 49 years, Doris of Le Mars; three children, Kimberly Long and her husband, Merle and their children, Katie and Kelli, of South Sioux City, Neb., Kurt Haage and his wife, Rita and their children, Brandon and Brooke, of Akron, and Troy Haage and his wife, Becky and their children, Hannah and Jonathan of Rosemount, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Klemme of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Duane Baack and his wife Peggy of Littleton, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Donna Mae Haage of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Baack of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Glen M. Haage, and brother-in-laws, Donald Baack and Wilmer Klemme.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig. Interment with military honors provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Craig. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue at the church Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until service time.
