Catherine "Kay" Ommen, 81, of Ceylon, Minn., and formerly of Akron, died early Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at her home in Ceylon.

Catherine "Kay" Feuerstein was born Feb. 21, 1926, in Sheldon, the daughter of Sylvester and Sylvia (Eichman) Feuerstein. As a young girl, Kay moved with her family to Watertown, S.D., were she attended Watertown High School graduating with the class of 1945. Following high school, Kay attended the Bartron School of Nursing in Watertown. Catherine was united in marriage to Ervin Ommen on Nov. 19, 1950 at Watertown, S.D.

Kay and Ervin lived in Garden City, S.D., before moving to Le Mars, Iowa in 1955. A few years later they moved back to Garden City until 1972 when they moved to Dell Rapids, S.D. From 1986 they lived in the Akron area before moving to Ceylon in 2004.

Kay had worked as an OB Supervisor at St. Ann's Hospital in Watertown and later as a private nurse for Harry Bartron also in Watertown. While in Dell Rapids, Kay served as the director of nursing for the South Dakota ODD Fellows Home. While living in Akron, Kay worked at the Akron Care Center. After moving to Ceylon, Kay worked briefly at the Armstrong Care Center in Armstrong.

At the age of 77, Kay fulfilled a lifetime dream, she went on a mission trip to Tanzania. Kay retired from her nursing career after 54 years as a registered nurse.

Kay enjoyed collecting elephants, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and ceramics. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Red Hat Society of Ceylon, Ceylon American Legion Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the Rebecca Lodge.

To honor Kay's memory the family will be creating a scholarship for nursing at the Iowa Lake's Community College. Memorial's will be directed this scholarship.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ervin on Ceylon, Minn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Debra Ommen of Ceylon, Minn.; three grandchildren: Jason Ommen of Ceylon, Minn., Jennifer and her husband, David Swan of Woodland Park, Colo., and Joy and her husband Dan Pockins of Pocono Summit, Pa.; and two great-granddaughters, Cassie and Adara Pockins; 10 brothers and sisters, Rozella Duke of Birmingham, Ala., Blanche and Leonard Roso of Lake Nordan, S.D., Lewis and Monica Feuerstein of Watertown, S.D., Melvin and Carol Feuerstein of Sioux Falls, S.D., James and Pat Feuerstein of Waterville, Minn., Sharon and Dennis Cayle of Spearfish, S.D., Vincent and Jan Feuerstein of Excelsior, Minn., Richard and Janet Feuerstein of Bronson, Mo., Judith and Duane Opsal of St. Michaels, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Sylvia (Eichman) Feuerstein; a brother, Robert Feuerstein; and two sisters, Arlene Madsen and Ruth Feuerstein.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn., with the Rev. Gordon Syverson officiating. Burial of her ashes will be on Tuesday, July 3, in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Craig. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today (Friday) at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn., followed by a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the church. Visitations will continue Saturday morning at the church form noon until service time.

Pallbearers will be Greg Feuerstein, David Feuerstein, Roy Feuerstein, Bradley Opsal, Gary Spurrel, Keith Asseln, Steve Owen, and Kenny Kittleson.
