Marvel “Sis” Johnson, 92, of Le Mars passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Reverend Gary Landsness officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitations will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church Friday morning. Arrangements are with Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.
Pallbearers will be David Janssen, Paul Janssen, Mark Buhman, Dennis Coughlin, Allen Coughlin, and Randy Niehus.
Marvel Luella Buhman was born July 15, 1916 in rural Plymouth County, Iowa near Le Mars to Walter and Minnie (Utesch) Buhman. “Sis” as she was known to family and friends was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Johnson Township. She attended school in Merrill, Iowa. She was united to William Muir on August 16, 1933. William passed away 1959. The couple lived in Merrill. Sis worked at the Hollanders Five and Dime Store in Le Mars for several years. She also had worked at Lewis Hardware and Schelin Cleaners in Le Mars. Sis had worked for 13 years as a baker and decorator at Vander Meer Bakery until her retirement. She later married Melvin Johnson on November 27, 1965 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Melvin passed away on June 11, 2002. Sis was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars where she enjoyed attending circle and helping with Vacation Bible School.
Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn of Le Mars; 3 grandchildren: Barbara Shostak and her husband Bruce of Le Mars, David Janssen of Omaha, NE, and Paul Janssen and his wife Sheila of Orange City, IA; 8 great grandchildren: Teresa Abram and her husband Alex of Omaha, NE, Brandon Shostak of Gowrie, IA and his fiancé Amy Salton of Sioux City, IA, Jean Janssen of Omaha, NE, Laura Janssen of Omaha, NE, Austin Janssen and his wife Carissa of Sioux City, IA, Haley Janssen of Orange City, IA, Mitchell Janssen of Orange City, IA, and Madison Janssen of Storm Lake, IA; a great great granddaughter: Morgan Abram; and several nephews and nieces.
Sis was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Minnie (Utesch) Buhman; 2 husbands, William Muir and Melvin Johnson; a son-in-law, Alfred Janssen; and her twin brother, Marvin “Bud” Buhman.
