REMSEN, Iowa -- LeRoy Plendl, 66, of Remsen died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Orange City Health Systems in Orange City, Iowa, following a long battle with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 220 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Plendl was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Amelia (Rodenbour) Plendl. He was raised in the Alton, Iowa, area and received his education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and served until 1956. He began farming in 1956 near Maurice, Iowa.

He married Janice Steichen on June 6, 1959. He then did road work from 1962 to 1965. He worked at Taloma Standard Oil in Struble, Iowa, from 1966 to 1969. He was employed at Russell's Ready Mix from 1969 to 1984. In 1972, he moved with his family into Remsen. He was employed at Joe's Ready Mix from 1984 to 2002. LeRoy and Janice owned and operated L&J Restaurant from September 1985 until March 1996. They also owned Plendl Trailer Court from 1991 to the present.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen.

Survivors include his wife, Janice of Remsen; three sons, Scott Plendl of Remsen, Todd Plendl of Remsen, and his special friend, Glenda Klemme of Akron, Iowa, and Troy Plendl and his wife, Cindi of Mount Vernon, Wash.; a daughter and her husband, Lisa and Steve Schmidt of Remsen; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Erika, Brianna and Matthew Plendl, Eric Fox and Austin and Levi Schmidt; a brother and his wife, Edmund and Lois Plendl of Maurice; and a sister and her husband, Irene and Roman Ortmann of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marcella Lampert.

Pallbearers will be Randy, Steve and Doug Ortmann and Mark, Lee and George Plendl.
