Albert John Harms, 98, of Sioux City was reunited with his daughter and son in heaven on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2004. Al passed away peacefully at his home with his wife of nearly 76 years and family at his side.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David A. Schoop officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Gerald Kapanka officiating, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Albert was born Feb. 20, 1906, in Struble, Iowa, the son of Nettie and Edo Harms. He moved to Sioux City later on and married Viola Binnebose on Jan. 18, 1929, at the Lutheran church in Le Mars.
He worked as a sales executive with Fairmont Foods for nearly 30 years. He also did custodial jobs over the years including at Calvary Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church.
He will be affectionately remembered by many friends and neighbors. Neighbors will remember a few years back, hearing and seeing his snow blower at 4:30 a.m. He did many walks in his neighborhood for several years. Even recently, he still managed to get out and about all over Leeds with his scooter. He loved his garden and yard. He was an avid golfer and bowler at one time. He loved going to church. As the other church members would shake his firm grip, they would joke with him over the tight grip he had, even in the later stages of his life. Al and his bride were honored last year with both a write up in the Sioux City Journal and a television spot, honoring their 75th wedding anniversary.
Left to remember and cherish many memories are his wife, Viola; three grandchildren, Cathy Dailey and Kim and her husband, Bill Kull, all of Sioux City, and John Prather and his wife, Sylvia, of Papillion, Neb. "Pa-Pa Al is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ashley Dailey, Curtis Kull, Catherine, Jenna, Johnny, Mick and Sarah Anne Prather; a son-in-law, Don Prather of Sioux City; three sisters, Pearl Brunstedt of Merrill, Iowa, Margaret Bowers of Sioux City and Bertha Briley of California; a sister-in-law, Elaine Harms of Sioux City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two children, Jo-Ann Prather in December 2002, and son, Curtis Wayne Harms at birth; three brothers, Charlie, George and Fritz Harms; and a sister, Amelia Ruhlow.
Pallbearers will be Don Prather, John Prather, Bill Kull, Taylor Dailey, Tim Dailey and Ashley Dailey. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandchildren, Mick Prather, Curtis Kull, Jenna Prather, Johnathon Prather, Catherine Prather and Sarah Anne Prather.
