REMSEN, Iowa -- Al F. Harpenau, 80, of Remsen died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart and Monsignor Nicholas J. Ruba officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Harpenau was born April 4, 1921, in rural Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Frank and Bernadine (Deters) Harpenau. He was raised in the Le Mars area and received his education at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. He was then engaged in farming near Le Mars.

He married Shirley Boever on Nov. 21, 1944, in Remsen. They made their home near Le Mars, where they farmed until 1958 when they moved to a farm near Remsen. They moved into Remsen in 1982, and Al retired in 1984. He had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center since March 11, 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Luxembourg Brotherhood.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Daniel and Amy of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Pat and Gary Reuter of Remsen; six grandchildren, Alicia and her husband, Justin Ott of Le Mars, Magan Harpenau of Le Mars, Dawn Reuter of Des Moines, Mike, Nick and Tonya Reuter, all of Remsen; a great-grandson, Cody Ott of Le Mars; two sisters, Philomine Schwarz of Marcus, Iowa, and Rita and her husband, Marvin Kolbeck of Le Mars; a brother, Isidore of Remsen; a sister-in-law, Loretta Harpenau of Remsen; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, John and his wife, Philomine, Henry and his wife, Mildred, Joe and his wife, Mary, Tony, the Rev. Leo C. and Clarence in infancy; three sisters, Mary and her husband, Tony Kolbeck, Evelyn and her husband, Ed Miller, and Regina in infancy; a brother-in-law, Joe Schwarz; and a sister-in-law, Rita Harpenau.

Pallbearers will be Mike and Nick Reuter, Justin Ott, George Dirksen, Jim and Kenny Harpenau, Wayne Kolbeck and Keith Miller. Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers will be Donald Hoss, Leonard and Roman Langel, Ralph Niehus, Evon Puetz and Ronald Ruhland. Luxembourg Brotherhood honorary pallbearers will be Duane Douvia, Herman Kluver, Bob Mai and Jim Wolf.
