PLACE of DEATH: at her residence
DATE of BIRTH: Sept. 19, 1928
PLACE of BIRTH: in Plymouth County, Iowa, rural Ireton, Iowa
PARENTS: daughter of Fred J. and Karoline (Marineau) Gronemeyer
SPOUSE & DATE of MARRIAGE: Francis L. “Shorty” Hazel June 6, 1947
PLACE OF MARRIAGE: LeMars, Iowa
OCCUPATION: The couple lived in LeMars until moving to Akron in 1974. The couple managed the Akron Register-Tribune newspaper until September of 1993, when they retired because of Velgene’s health problems. She was employed by the LeMars Daily Sentinel newspaper for 10 years prior to serving as editor of the Akron Register-Tribune for 20 years. She also found Akron’s weekly “Town Crier” publication.
SURVIVORS: include her husband of Akron; a son; two daughters; five grandsons; a granddaughter; a step granddaughter; a step great grandson; two sisters and their husbands, Loris and Herman Heeren and Velma and Leonard Wiltgen, all of LeMars; a brother and his wife, Wendell and Carmen Gronemeyer of Lake Wales, Fla.; a cousin, Ramona (Popken) VanderHelm of Akron; and several aunts.
PRECEDED in DEATH by: her parents; a brother, Lyle Gronemeyer; a sister-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.
PLACE of BURIAL: St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Craig, Iowa
