Arlen H. "Louie" Luschen, 73, of Le Mars, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Arlen "Louie" Herbert Luschen was born March 31, 1935, the son of Henry and Emma (Frerichs) Luschen. Louie was raised on a farm in Grant Township and later the family moved to Le Mars. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1953. Louie was united in marriage to Mary Hettwer on Sept. 19, 1958, at Rock Valley. The couple made their home in Le Mars. He worked as a tool and die maker for American Equipment in Sioux City for 25 years, retiring in 1981.

Louie was a "jack-of-all-trades." He could fix or re-build anything he put his mind to. He was an accomplished gunsmith, having built and repaired guns for many people throughout the area. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when time and his health permitted. He especially enjoyed going prairie dog hunting in South Dakota. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary of Le Mars; three children: Cindy Kistner and her husband Mike of Walker, Minn., and their children Nathan, Jaime, and Amanda, Mark Luschen of Le Mars, and Lori Gaumnitz and her husband Bernie of Le Mars and their daughter Kori; and several other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Edna Pecks and Dorothy Luschen; and two brothers, Leonard and Raymond Luschen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with Rev. Larry Fett of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until service time. Pallbearers will be Larry Luschen, Randy Luschen, Keith Hettwer, Brian Hettwer, Dick Halter, and Ray Wilkens.
