WWII Veteran

Floyd W. Hummel, 93, of Elk Point, South Dakota formerly of Westfield, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Prairie Estates in Elk Point, South Dakota.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 5, 2007 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. George Affeldt will officiate. Burial will follow in the Westfield Cemetery in Westfield, Iowa with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 of Elk Point, SD. Visitations will be from 10:00 a.m. until service Monday at the funeral home.

Floyd Walter-Dee Hummel was born February 27, 1913 on the family farm near Westfield, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Goldie (Coppock) Hummel. He attended school in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in 1932. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935. He was a member of the United State Army Air Corps, serving his country in the Caribbean during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with rank of Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Ruth Johnson on November 22, 1946 in Gross, Nebraska. Floyd and Ruth lived in Elk Point for many years. Floyd worked over the years as both an electrician and a refrigeration service technician. Ruth passed away in May of 1991.

Floyd was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 915 and Masonic Lodge Number #3 of Elk Point, South Dakota. Floyd enjoyed tinkering with anything electrical and/or mechanical; vintage autos and pickups; using his garden tractor.

Survivors include his two sons: Charles Hummel (Laurie) of Richland, SD, and Myron Hummel of Chillicothe, IL; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister: Sylvia Rosenbaum of Elk Point, SD; a brother: Thomas Hummel of Elk Point, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 3 brothers: Earl, Lynn, and Gordon; and 2 sisters: Verda Klapprodt and Mary Jane Rosenbaum.
