HERE 82 YEARSGeorge H. Bender, 84, a resident of this community for 82 years passed away Monday morning at his farm home two miles southeast of Hinton.
Mr. Bender was born November 21, 1865, at Mendota, Ill., and came to this community with his parents when he was two years old and the family settled on the same farm where the deceased had continued his residence for 82 years. He married Elizabeth Blecker in March 1894 at Merrill, Iowa.
Mr. Bender was a member of the Melbourne Evangelical church and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was a charter member of the Farmer’s Co-Op Co. at Hinton and a member of the board of directors for more than 25 years. For 50 years he was a member of the Floyd Valley I.O.O.F. Lodge. Mr. Bender was widely known and during his 82 years here had served his community in various capacities. He will be remembered by many as an honorable man, a good friend and loyal to the community in all his dealings.
Survivors include his son, Dewey Bender, of Hinton, and two brothers, John, of Clinton, Minn., and F.W., of Long Beach, Cal.
His wife preceded him in death in 1934, and his daughter, Clairbel in 1941.
Funeral services were at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Melbourne Evangelical-United Brethren church, Rev. John Paul Vincent, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Sioux City officiated, assisted by Rev. Darald D. Eller, pastor of the Evangelical-United Brethren church at Melbourne, Paul Schneider, soloist; Mrs. Henry Hedsen, accompanist, both of Sioux City. Burial was in the Melbourne cemetery.
Pallbearers were Albert Jauer, Ollie Harrison, Allen Schindel, Earl Remer, Elmer Young and Claire Schneider.
Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bender and daughter, Dona Jean, of Clinton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Sam Blecker of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. William McAlpine of Sheldon, Iowa.
