Joseph "Joe" F. Heuertz, 84, of Remsen, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Joseph F. Heuertz was born Jan. 11, 1923, at rural Remsen, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Haverkamp) Heuertz. Joe was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen, from which he graduated in 1940. He was then a farm laborer in the Remsen area. On Oct. 16, 1945, he married Marie Masuen at Oyens. They made their home near Neptune, where they farmed until 1953. They then moved to south of Remsen to farm. They moved into Remsen in 1981 and he continued to farm until 1986 when he semi-retired. He then worked part-time at Remsen Processing Center in Remsen until fully retiring in 1998. Marie died Nov. 7, 1998. In 2001 he moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars. He had been a resident of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen since January 2004.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly in Remsen. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, James and David and his wife Chris, all of Remsen, Robert and his wife Jennifer of Le Mars; three daughters and their husbands, Jean and Clarence Willett of Alton, Debra and Robert Majeres of Le Mars, Mary and Russ Robb of Yankton, S.D.; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank and his wife Shirley of Westminster, Colo.; two sisters, Therese Freking of Le Mars, Shirley and her husband Robert "LaVerne" Jaminet of Remsen; and one brother-in-law, Marvin Pick and his wife Donna of Marcus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary in infancy, Rose Pick; one brother-in-law, Leo Freking.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service, all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Steve, Matt, Justin and Michael Heuertz, Todd Majeres and Scott Paulsen. Honorary bearers will be Emily, Rachael, Stephanie, Ashley and Jodi Heuertz.
