John Blackmore, 78, of Merrill, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

John Albert Blackmore was born July 11, 1928, in Merrill, the son of Walter and Hedvig (Schultz) Blackmore. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. John grew up on the family farm west of Merrill and attended school in Hinton.

John was united in marriage to Marian Cumihow on Sept. 9, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they farmed in Liberty Township in Plymouth County. While farming, he occasionally worked at Fullerton Lumber in Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years, Marian; four children: Peggy McCoy of Merrill, Terry Blackmore and his wife Lynne of Merrill, Darrell Blackmore and his wife Janis of Spicer, Minn., and Donna Tiesler and her husband Kenneth of Merrill; seven grandchildren: Sheila McCoy and her husband Daniel Keister of Washington, D.C., Christy Murra and her husband Jason of Le Mars, David Blackmore of Merrill, Alicia Blackmore of Des Moines, Corey Blackmore of Sioux City, Elizabeth Bates and her husband Kevin of Le Mars, and Stacy Tiesler of Merrill; seven great-grandsons: Robert, Andrew, Michael, and Nathan Murra and Matthew, Brevin, and Connor Bates; four brothers: Lawrence Blackmore of Hinton, Orville Blackmore and his wife Viola of Merrill, Walter Blackmore and his wife Barbara of Kings, Ill., and Larry Blackmore of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters: Mary Crippen of Merrill and Lorine Hawkins of Maurice; a sister-in-law: Joretta Blackmore Harms of Lennox, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Juanita Schoen, Dorothy Hesebeck, and Betty Blackmore in infancy; a brother: Norman Blackmore; four brothers-in-law: Albert Hesebeck, Robert Crippen, Marvin Schoen, and Kenneth Hawkins; a sister-in-law: Georganna Blackmore; and three grandchildren: Kimberly, Julie, and Kyle McCoy.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Johnson Township, rural Merrill, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitations will be after 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present after 6 p.m. to greet friends followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Friday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Casketbearers will be David Blackmore, Corey Blackmore, Jason Murra, Kevin Bates, Kenneth Tiesler, and Terry McCoy.
