Dale Schulz, 84, of Le Mars, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars, (Brentwood) in Le Mars.

Dale H. Schulz was born Jan. 22, 1924, on the family farm near Chester, S.D., the son of Paul J. and Tena Marie (Hussmann) Schulz. When he was a young child, the family moved to Lone Wolf, Okla., where he received his education and graduated from Lone Wolf High School and later attended Cammeron College at Lawton, Okla. Dale served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. Dale had attained the rank of Carpenter's Mate Second Class while assigned with the Navy Seabees constructing airfields in the South Pacific. While in port in California, Dale served as an extra in the movie "Fighting Seabees" with John Wayne.

Upon his discharge from the service in December 1945, Dale returned to Oklahoma. He was united in marriage to Arlene (Hutton) Dirks on Oct. 15, 1946, near Ireton. Dale worked as the manager of the Alton Coop Lumber Yard from 1950 to 1978. While living in Alton, Dale was a volunteer fireman with the Alton Fire Department for many years. Dale and Arlene were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. Dale and Arlene moved to Le Mars in 1978. After Dale's sight had failed, he attended the Orientation Center for the Blind in Des Moines in 1979. Dale established a woodshop in his home and created sandblasted pictures and wooden frames. In later years, Dale received an award from the Governor of Iowa for volunteerism for his service on the Iowa Department for the Blind's Advisory Committee to the Center for Independent Living. While on the committee, Dale served as an ambassador with his positive philosophy about blindness, and when asked he always would give talks and served as a peer counselor to other blind persons.

Dale is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene Schulz of Le Mars; a daughter and son-in-law, LaRae Toel and her husband Randall of Le Mars; a granddaughter, Carmen McNaughton and her husband Aaron of Le Mars and their children Lillian and Holly; a sister, LaVon Schreiner of Hobart, Okla.; a son-in-law, Bruce Engle of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews to include a special niece and nephew, Norman Schulz of Yukon, Okla., and Janis Wald of Hobart, Okla.; and in-laws: Gene and Cece Hutton of Sioux City, Nelson Hutton Jr. of Dakota City, Neb., Mrs. Myron "Carol" Hutton of Craig, Coralie VandeMheen of South Sioux City, Neb., Marlin and Joyce Hutton of Windsor, Colo., and Roberta and Charles Williams of O'Neil, Neb.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. and Tena Marie (Hussmann) Schulz; a daughter, Dona Engle in 2006; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Frances Schulz; a sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Edward Trentham; two brothers-in-law, Sam Schreiner and Myron "Red" Hutton; a sister-in-law, Barbara Eye; and a nephew Denzle Schulz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville, will be at the Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Loren Kuecker, Bob Howard, Randy Grasz, Brian Rohlfs, Mike Hutton, and Rick Renken. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Hemmingson, Merlyn Miller, Robert Kewley, Marvin Pottebaum, Maynard Lang, Roger Lunstra, Lester Grasz, Jerry Meister, and Glen DeVries.
