Claude L. Treinen, 90, of Remsen, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Claude L. Treinen was born March 22, 1917, at Remsen, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Lehnertz) Treinen. Claude was raised in the Remsen area and in the early 1930s moved with his family into Remsen, where he received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School from which he graduated in 1937.

On Aug. 31, 1942, he married Frances Pohlen at Remsen where they made their home and raised their seven children. On Nov. 27, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II, being honorably discharged Nov. 20, 1945. He then returned to Remsen where he managed the state liquor store and also had part time jobs at the V.F.W. Club, Ross Motor Co. and drove school bus. His wife, Frances, died April 1, 1969. He retired in 1979.

On Dec. 11, 1982, he married Anita Olson in McAllen, Texas. They lived in Watertown, S.D. and Elrose, Saskatchewan, Canada and wintered in southern Texas. They later moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. In May of 2007 he entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen and had been a resident of Sunrise Retirement Community since Sept. 5, 2007.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen, V.F.W. Post 3328 and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, throwing horseshoes, gardening and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Anita of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada; four daughters, Jan Jensen of Omaha, Neb, Claudette and her husband Randy Brower of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Linda and her husband Jeff Bauler of Iowa City, Lisa Treinen of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Tim and Terri of Monroe Township, N.J., Terry and Terry of San Antonio, Texas; seven stepchildren, Eilain, Trisha, Julie, Murry, Adrian, Evan and Cheryl; eight grandchildren, Trisha Clifton, Steve Hudson, Frank Brower, Nicole Jackson, Laura Treinen, Julia Tanney, Matt Bauler and Nick Treinen; six great-grandchildren, Derek and Sadie Hudson, Alec and Cole Clifton, Joey Williams and Scott Brower; one sister, Elizabeth O'Leary of Uticia, Mich.; and one sister-in-law, Leota Treinen of Coralville.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nancy Treinen; one grandson, Scott Brower; seven brothers, Raymond in infancy, Albert, Leonard, Edmund, Francis, Lewis and LeRoy; and three sisters, Helen Treinen in infancy, Blanche Collins and Kathryn Snyder.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Monday). There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casket bearers will be Jerry Arens, Jeff Bauler, Steve Hudson, Frank Brower, Leo Stoos and Nick Treinen.
